OUR BERU

1949-1950: Lokappa Gowda and family.

FINDING NEW LAND

Over a century ago our ancestors migrated from a small village, in South Canara to the foothills of the Western Ghats, with a vision to improve the lives of the villagers in the region.

The hilly terrain offered little access to homes in the interior of the village cutting them off from cattle that could help with manual labor and more. Our ancestors, being the leaders of this village, recognized these challenges and moved to a part of the land that gave them deeper access into the terrain.

PLANTING THE SEED

In search of fresh pastures, the family eventually crossed Mudigere and soon found their true calling, coffee.

Three generations after the first migration, Ramdas Gowda was born. The family had since settled in Bilagali and spent years studying the ins and outs of coffee.

Circa 1961: Ramdas Gowda with the family dogs. Rexy and Ruby, who were so loved that they are still talked about today on the estate.

BREWING WITH COMMUNITY

Ramdas soon joined the family business acquiring paddy fields, more land for coffee and areca plantations. By the time Ramdas had a son of his own, they had achieved significant success in the coffee industry through hard work and dedication to their business.

BLENDING THE BUSINESS

Ramdas's son Balaji continued his family legacy, eventually starting his own family.

Balaji noticed the effects of modernization and globalization- despite the quality of their beans, they had to sell the beans cheap, which would eventually be packaged with someone else's name and sold at a premium that the farmers, the real hands behind the coffee, never got to see.

2022: Tanai with his father, Balaji.

COFFEE WITH HISTORY

A new era of the estate began when Tanai, Balaji's son, joined the business. He knew that the key was to bypass the middlemen and sell their beans straight from the farm. This way, they would be able to ensure the integrity of the beans, sell the beans for what they are worth and empower their farmers.

And so, with the guidance of his father, and the legacy of 4 generations before them, Beru is on a mission to bring you coffee beans directly from farm to cup.
